Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Day (1955: 440): ''Branchiae as in Thelepus; no lateral lobes on anterior segments; no ventral pads; notosetae from segment 3 (2nd branchiferous) to end of thorax but absent from the abdomen; no uncini on the thorax but present on abdominal segments.'' So Day's original diagnosis did not mention the character now considered the most important for diagnosing a Telothelepus and possibly a member of 'Telothelepodidae'. This character is a large elongate upper tentacular lobe (cephalic lobe in Day) on the head. The lobe is 'frilly' edged and carries numerous tentacles (see Day 1967: 731 & fig on p 734). [details]
Etymology Not stated. The generic name is composed by the prefix of Greek origin telo-, meaning 'end', 'completion' or 'origin', followed by the name of the genus Thelepus Leuckart, 1849. It is unclear to which of the morphological features of the new genus the name refers to. [details]
