Diagnosis From Pillai (1961: 2): "Dorsal cirri of the anterior region and ventral cirri throughout the body double. Prostomium indented in front, palps and tentacles tapering, two pairs of eyes. Branchiae present, each as a simple vascular modification of the region below the dorsal cirrus and with or without a ventral fin. Dorsal body wall of each branchiferous segment produced into a vascular flap. Setae all homogomph spinigers."
From Banse (1977: 625): " Gymnonereidinae with papillae on oral ring of proboscis. Jaws without teeth. Some dorsal cirri in anterior body region with one accessory cirrus each. Median body region with dorsal cirri on elongated vascularized cirrophores, conspicuous transversal dorsal folds, and long neuropodial presetal lips." [details]
Etymology Not stated, but presumably Tambalagamia makes reference to the type locality of the genotype of the genus, Tambalagam Bay or Lake (Sri Lanka). [details]
