Classification Marphysa novaehollandiae was first established in genus Nauphanta, currently a synonym of Marphysa. It was first placed in Eunice subgenus Marphysa by Grube (1878), but as late as 1987 Fauchald treated genus and species Nauphanta novaehollandiae as valid. Some (eg Gravier, 1900: 270) have treated the species as a synonym of Marphysa mossambica (Peters, 1854). Gravier did not examine specimens. This junior synonymy was also the subsequent assessment of Glasby & Hutchings (2010: 37). Most recently Molina-Acevedo & Idris (2021) treated it as a valid Marphysa, while presenting a tabulation of the morphology of the holotype of Marphysa novaehollandiae. However, they did not present a formal redescription and synonymy for the species. [details]
