It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Denise Bellan-Santini, one of the founding editors of ERMS and an Amphipoda editor in WoRMS.Denise Bellan-Santini began her career in the early 1960s at the Endoume Marine Station in Marseille and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). She remained there throughout her life, ultimately serving as Director of Research Emeritus until her passing.
From the outset, Denise played a key role in the European Community’s ERMS Concerted Action, “A register of marine species in Europe to facilitate marine biodiversity research and management,” coordinating efforts for the Western Mediterranean. Together with Professor Mark Costello, the project leader, she authored all ERMS documentation on Amphipoda, covering 1,183 species. Denise also contributed to the Synopsis of Antarctic Amphipods and described numerous species from Antarctic and sub-Antarctic collections. Since the launch of the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), she served as editor for the family Ampeliscidae.
Over her career, Denise described 118 valid species, as well as three genera and one family. While she focused primarily on the Ampeliscidae—with 33 species described, including 26 Ampelisca and 7 Haploops—her taxonomic work spanned 36 families. These include ten species of Tryphosidae; six species each in the Eusiridae, Stenothoidae, and Urothoidae; and five species in the Iphimediidae.
Denise leaves behind an extraordinary body of work that will continue to shape the study of marine amphipods. Tireless, determined, and principled, she produced research that remains foundational for oceanographers in the Mediterranean and across the world’s oceans. Her scientific legacy has influenced generations of marine biologists and ecologists, both at the Endoume Marine Station and throughout the global amphipod research community.
The WoRMS DMT extends its heartfelt condolences to Denise’s family, friends, and colleagues.
Her full obituary and a list of the species she described can be found at the link below.
