Definition of Wave height:
The vertical distance between the trough and the following crest [1].

Notes

In an irregular wave field, successive incident waves have different amplitudes and phases. In deep water the wave height distribution often follows approximately a Rayleigh distribution. However, this is not the case in the surf zone where the wave height is limited by the water depth.
