Description Trichomes free-floating, solitary or (rarely) in irregular clusters, usually loosely coiled, isopolar, almost cylindrical along the whole length, finely but distinctly constricted at the cross-walls, not attenuated towards ends, without mucilage. Cells elongated, long barrel-shaped to cylindrical, pale blue-green, with elongated aerotopes, 2.5-11 (12) x 2.5-4.5 (5?) μm; apical cells cylindrical and rounded. Heterocytes solitary, intercalary, oval (longer than wide), barrel-shaped to cylin-drical, usually a little wider than vegetative cells, 5.4-11 x (2.8) 4-7 μm. Akine¬tes intercalary, solitary (rarely in pairs), distant from heterocytes, long-cylindrical with rounded ends, sometimes slightly arcuate, (13.5) 16-30 (45) x (4.5) 5.4-7.8 (8.5?) μm. [details]
Identification Loosening of trichome coiling up to almost straight form can occur in cultures and rarely also in natural populations. Variability of length: width ratio of vegetative cells is high under culture conditions, and in these cases conditions morphological transition to D. sigmoideum can occur. [details]
