Description Mats flat, mucilaginous, blackish or dark blue-green, with irregularly and usually densely arranged filaments. Filaments without sheaths and usually without special gelatinous envelopes; trichomes cylindrical, irregularly coiled, constricted at the cross-walls, not attenuated or slightly narrowed at the ends. Cells barrel-shaped or subspherical, isodiametric or slightly shorter or longer than wide without gas vesicles, 2.5-6 x (3) 4-6 μm; terminal cells conical-rounded. Heterocytes intercalary, solitary, ± spherical or slightly elongated and oval, 6-8.5 x 5-6 (7) μm. Akinetes arise distant from the heterocytes, oval, longer than wide, in rows, 8-15 x (6) 7-9.5 (11) μm, with smooth, colourless to yellow-brown cell wall. — Variable species, from which were described several subspecific taxa (f. crasser Voronichin 1923, f. tentassima Gruia 1963), which can belong probably to a few different genospecies (genetic units, Fig. 11214 Particularly types with clearly elongated cells and akinetes 4-9 x 4.5-6.8 μm (see e.g., El-Ayouty & al. 1977 from Egypt), or var. cylindrarea Playfair 1918 (cells 4-6 x 3 μm, heterocytes 7.5-10.5 x 4-5 μm, akinetes 7.5-10 x 5-6 μm) are probably separate species. A good review of the variability of Anabaena (= Trichormus) variabilis was published by Fjerdingstad (1969). — Many populations were isolated in cultures and several of them are commonly used as model strains.
