Description Cells are anteroposteriorly compressed. Cells have a smooth theca ornamentation. Cell depth is slightly smaller than cell width. The ranges of cell length, width, and depth measured by LM are 46–66 μm, 71–93 μm, and 68–88 μm. The shape of the Po plate, centered or slightly displaced toward the ventral side, is elliptical with a fishhook-shaped slit. The 2' plate is the largest apical plate. Of the precingular plates, the 3'' plate is the largest, and the 1'' and 7'' plates are the smallest. Of the postcingular plates, the 2''' and 4''' plates are the largest, the 3''' plate intermediate, and the 1''' and 5''' plates are the smallest. The shape of 1p plate is mostly pentagonal and broad. Thecal plate formula is Po, 3', 7'', 6C, 6S?, 1p, 5''', 2''''. [details]
Identification The morphology of G. jejuensis differs from that of all described Gambierdiscus species and has a smooth theca ornamentation and a broad 1p plate, unlike G. balechii, G. belizeanus, G. cheloniae, G. lapillus, and G. scabrosus. These species have the reticulate-foveate ornamentation and a narrow 1p plate. They also differ from G. honu and G. pacificus that have a narrow 1p plate. G. jejuensis has cell depth, width, and length (mean=78, 85, and 56 μm, respectively) considerably larger than those of G. honu (51, 52, and 34 μm) and G. pacificus (59 μm, 54 μm, and 40 μm). In addition, G. jejuensis has a ratio of cell depth relative to cell width (mean=0.92) smaller than that of G. australes (1.16), G. carpenteri (1.09), G. excentricus (1.17), G. slivae (1.08), and G. toxicus (1.12). The nucleus of G. jejuensis is positioned in the central region, whereas the nucleus of G. caribaeus, G. carolinianus, and G. polynesiensis is positioned in the hypotheca. The nucleus position of only 2 Korean strains (n=20), however, was examined and thus that of other strains of G. jejuensis should be additionally examined to use this feature as a key for differentiating G. jejuensis from the other Gambierdiscus species.
