Distribution Freshwater, planktic, in mesotrophic and eutrophic, large lakes and stagnant waters, forming red water blooms; cold water form, often in winter colouring the water red under the ice; it occurs in several regions in northern temperate zone with obligatory distribution (delimited areas: lakes in Austria, SE France, Germany, Switzerland, N Italy etc.); outside of these areas occurs occasionally over the whole temperate zone; the red populations from S and central Norway belong probably to a special morphotype, as well as from NE USA. Interesting populations were described from Brazil (cf. Werner & Rosa 1992). However, all records from tropical countries are problematic and must be revised g., Oscillatoria rubescens f. ahniedabadensis Kamat 1962, var. curvata Kamat 1963 and var. kolhapurensis Kamat 1963 from India; O. rubescens sensu Compère with granular content of cells from Lake Chad; O. rubescens sensu Tiwari 1975 with 9-11.5 μm wide trichomes and living in bundles in paddy field soils Mysore, India; etc.). Description Trichomes straight or slightly curved, solitary, free-floating, sometimes forming purple-red (when dried violet) free-swimming irregular clusters and water blooms, without sheaths (very fine sheaths can appear only in culture), pale purple-red, (3.9) 6-8 (9.4) μm wide, facultatively slowly motile, without rotation, not constricted at the sometimes granulated cross-walls, gradually attenuated to the ends. Cells nearly isodiametric, or slightly longer or shorter than wide, after the division 1/2-1/3x as long as wide, 2-4 (5) μm long, with numerous aerotopes, with large amount of PE. Apical cells rounded, tapered, bluntly conical, rarely capitate, with convex calyptra.
