Taxonomic remark J. Pignatti (2022) pers. comm. kindly brought to our attention that according to the principle of coordination of the ICZN (1999), Neoschwagerinoidea Dunbar & Condra, 1927 is a junior synonym of Verbeekinoidea Staff & Wedekind, 1910.
The characteristics of the superfamily are (1) the presence of a fine keriothecal wall; (2) the presence of parachomata; (3) the axial and transverse secondary septula. The two first characters are present in the three families, but the last one is only developed in the third family : Neoschwagerinidae. It is noteworthy that in a classications only based on the internal endoskeleton, Verbeekinidae and Neoschwageridae are interpreted as belonging to two different orders/superfamilies. So we consider the family Neoschwagerinidae as more characteristic of the superfamily, and we suggest to denominate it Neoschwagerinoidea. In application of the article 35.5 of the ICZN, Neoschwagerinoidea is also to be kept since it is currently in prevailing usage (see for instance Ueno (2021)). [details]
