Type species There is disagreement about the type species of Hemicorallium. Gray (1867) established Hemicorallium and designated Corallium johnsoni Gray, 1860 as the type species. Johnson (1899) later noted that the specimen illustrated by Gray in the genus description was not C. johnsoni but a different species that he described as Pleurocorallium tricolor. Tu et al (2015) argue that P. tricolor should therefore be considered the type species of Hemicorallium. C. johnsoni has subsequently been moved to Pleurocorallium which would synonymize Hemicorallium with Pleurocorallium if C. johnsoni is considered the type species of Hemicorallium. [details]
