are very nearly identical. Both papers were published in 1872, but in one
(Nat. Hist. Trans. Northumberland & Durham vol. IV, pt. II, p. 443) he
used the words " Macrocheiron new genus ", in the other paper (Ann.
Mag. N. H., ser. 4, vol. X, p. 9) in the text the words "Macrochiron new
genus ", but on the plate the spelling " Macrocheiron ". Although it is
hard to decide which spelling has priority, I am inclined to accept the
name Macrochiron as being older. At any rate, the relevant issue of the
Ann. Mag. N. H. was published in July, 1872, whereas that of the Nat.
Hist. Trans. must have been printed after Oct. 20th, 1872 (on p. 530 of
that issue there is a list of the members of the Society on Oct. 20th).
Moreover, Macrochiron conforms with the transliteration recomm [details]
