Taxonomic remark This note was written by Janet W. Reid, Jan 2023:
Mildred Wilson discussed the problem of synonymies among taxa assigned variously to one of a group of North American harpacticoids (Wilson, M.S. (1958). North American harpacticoid copepods. 5. The status of Attheyella americana (Herrick) and the correct name for the subgenus Brehmiella. Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington 71:49-52. (9-v-1958).
According to Wilson, all these actions (synonymies listed in her paper on p. 50) refer to one of three confusingly similar species, and Attheyella northumbricoides and the later nomen novum Canthocamptus willeyi are synonymies of Attheyella (Mrazekiella) americana (Herrick, 1884).
Wilson gave a fairly complete list of synonyms and included A. (Brehmiella) dentata subsp. americana Lang (1948) in the synonymy of A. (Neo.) americana.
According to Wilson, Lang was not correct in assigning all these names to A. (Brehmiella) dentata, and she explained the problem very clearly.
Confusingly, in another 1925 paper, Willey called his taxon "Canthocamptus northumbricoides" (Willey, A. (1925). Copepods in the northern hemisphere. Nature, London 116(2910):206, fig. 1. (8-viii-1925))
In the same 1958 paper, Wilson corrected the name of the subgenus from Brehmiella to Mrázekiella. Later, Ozdikmen & Pesce (2006) changed the subgenus name from Mrazekiella to Neomrazekiella. This taxon is still considered a subgenus, not a genus. [details]
