Biology zooxanthellate [details]Unreviewed
Description The species is oval and is distinguished by the existence of lobes scattered on the surface outside the central part of the calice. Each marks the start of a new septum which runs towards the periphery. This is a common species, found mostly on hard reef substrate and coral rubble, preferring clear water. Fungia seychellensis, recently described, may be the correct name for several existing records of F scutaria. (Sheppard, 1998 <308>)
Corals oval, thick and heavy, up to 170 mm long. Primary septa are inserted with a tall tentacular lobe and these are distributed at regular intervals from the mouth to the perimeter. Colour: usually brown or yellow, often with bright-green tentacular lobes. Abundance: very common and distinctive. Found with other Fungia species and also on upper reef slopes exposed to strong wave action. (Veron, 1986 <57>)
Probably the most common fungiid. Solitary, oval, thick and heavy, attaining a diameter of 18 cm. Septa with fine teeth and thickened tentacular lobes. Colour: Polyps very from yellow to brown and green, but tentacles are usually bright green. Habitat: varied, often on upper reef slopes. (Richmond, 1997) [details]
Type locality "Indian Ocean" (Veron, 1986). [details]
