Although authorship of the family Colomastigidae has been assigned in the past to Stebbing, 1899 (Bowman and Abele, 1982; Barnard and Karaman, 1991), it appears that Chevreux, 1899, is the correct authority. Stebbing (1899) is responsible for emending the spelling of the family from Colomastidae (Chevreux, 1899) to Colomastigidae, reflecting the use of the appropriate stem in forming the family name. Thus, Colomastigidae is a "justified emendation" of an "incorrect original spelling" (Colomastidae) and as such retains the author and date of the original spelling. (From LeCroy, 1995)
