Alien species The Japanese sargasso weed Sargassum muticum was originally only found along the coasts of Japan, Russia, Korea and China. The seaweed was imported into Europe together with Japanese oysters (straight from Asia or from Canadian cultured ones contaminated with the seaweed). In Belgium, although the species has been washing up along the shore since the 1970s, it took until 1999 before the first rooted specimens were reported, in the port of Zeebrugge. In areas where the seaweed's invasion is successful (this is not the case in Belgium), it replaces indigenous species by its fast growth. However, when floating; the sea grass supports a community of different marine organisms by providing food, shelter, foraging areas and adhesive surfaces.
