Validity The name Asterinopsis is retained because the identity of the type species Asterias penicillaris Lamarck, 1816 is uncertain since no type material extant (Mortensen, 1933a) and the figure from Linck (1733, pl.34, no.57) might represent any short-rayed stellate asterinid with blunt arm tips. If current reorganization of the asteroid collection in the Paris Museum doesn't reveal Lamarck's type material of A. penicellaris, a new generic name would be desirable for these asterinids. [details]
