Authority Grube (1850: 318) had earlier recognised the family as "Opheliacea", part of tribus Limivora, and for genus Ophelia (not Ophelina), but Malmgren (1867:73) first used the required 'idae' formulation as Opheliidae. [details]

Classification See Travisiidae for Travisia species, and comments on their transfer out of a former position in Opheliidae to Scalibregmatidae (as subfamily Travisiinae) and then to the independent sister family, Travisiidae, to Scalibregmatidae.
Originally Hartmann-Schröder (1971: 383) had divided the Opheliidae into three subfamilies, namely the nominal subfamily Opheliinae, based on Ophelia, the subfamily Travisiinae Hartmann-Schröder for Travisia (now a distinct family), and the subfamily Ophelininae Hartmann-Schröder for Ophelina. This has resulted in a confusing spelling similarity of subfamilies Opheliinae and Ophelininae [details]
