Taxonomic remark Note incorrect spelling "gayii" in Allman (1873). The name was introduced as var. robusta by Allman. According to the ICZN, all variety names introduced before 1960 are taxonomically automatically reconized as subspecies.
As the subspecies gayi and robusta occur sympatrically, they are either distinct species or only morphological variants of S. gayi that cannot be formally named.
