Taxonomy According to Sieg, 1983b:109, A. anomalus is actually the type species for Sphyrapus, because when Sphyrapus malleolus was designated the type species for the “new genus”, Sphyrapus by Norman & Stebbing, 1886:97, it was only a nomen nudum. This interpretation is not accepted by most workers. [details]
