Status "Nereis rubro annulata" is a non-existent name, mistakenly mentioned by Grube. It cannot appear in synonymies nor can it have a type locality. Any author must be Grube alone. In the text flow of a review Grube (1870: 50) mentions a "Nereis rubro annulata" (note the space between rubro and annulata, although species epithets must be one word), a name he claims was in Claparède's recently published "Les Annélides Chétopodes du Golfe de Naples". However, no such name exists in Claparède's work. Nevertheless the Hartman catalogue (1959: 270) gave this phantom name a checklist entry, correctly as "rubro annulata", but incorrectly with Claparède as the author (how could Claparède author a phantom name he was unaware of), and assigning the name as a synonym of Ceratonereis costae. Villalobos-Guerrero et al (2022: 2343) incorrectly presented the name as if written "rubroannulata" (one word), with incorrect authorship of Claparède in Grube 1870. Again if there is an author it can only be Grube. Villalobos-Guerrero et al (2022) correctly regard this name as a nomen nudum. With the history so explained there should be no further interest in this name. Note that in WoRMS the name has necessarily been written "rubro-annulata" instead of the original "rubro annulata" as a space in a two-word species name is not allowed. [details]
