Etymology Nereis vittata is named using the adjective vittatus -a -um, meaning decorated or bound with a ribbon, perhaps a reference to the different coloured anterior segment common in Eunice species (which Nereis vittata is), or perhaps to some other characteristic entirely. Delle Chiaje's description is short and puzzling, "Corpore hyalino aequaliter ac transverse luteo-vittato" but it is unclear what that means.  [details]

Publication date Sherborn (1922) in the second part (1800-1850) of his Index Animalium suggests (without certainty) that volume 4 of Delle Chiaje pages 117-214 was published in 1831. This should be considered as the latest possible date, however the title page date is 1829 [details]
