Taxonomy Ehlers (1897) synonymized Chaetopterus antarcticus Kinberg, 1867 to the Mediterranean C. variopedatus, as continued to be done for Chaetopterus (e.g. all of genus synonymised in the Hartman catalogue of 1959), but today with better knowledge regional Chaetopterus species are separated. Specimens from Burdwood Bank / Namuncurá Bank off Argentina that Moore et al (2017) state are Chaetopterus antarcticus, type locality Straits of Magellan, are treated as valid by them, on molecular data. The latitudes are approximately the same, and the areas are reasonably adjacent, so Chaetopterus from that locality seem likely to be Kinberg's species. They also recognized a sister C. cf. antarcticus from the nearby Scotia Arc. [details]
