Type species Iphionella specimen recorded as I. cimex (Quatrefages) by Mclntosh, 1885:58 was named I. philippinensis by Pettibone, 1986 [details]
Type species An unusual change of type species has occurred in Iphionella. Iphione cimex Quatrefages, 1866 was the type species for Iphionella McIntosh (1885) by monotypy. Pettibone (1986) recognised that McIntosh's Iphionella specimen was not Iphione cimex Quatrefages, and she described and named it as Iphionella philippensis Pettibone, 1986. As Iphione cimex was not an Iphione, and not in Iphioninae (yet to be separated at family rank), she moved it to a new genus, Gaudichaudius in Polynoidae. She stated the type species situation as follows: "Type-species: Iphionella cimex; not Iphione cimex Quatrefages, 1866 (= Iphionella philippinensis, new name)". This was not correct and strictly, she should have simply moved Iphionella to Polynoinae and created a new Iphioninae genus for McIntosh's misidentified specimen. McCowin et al. (2018) used Code article 70.3 (Misidentified type species) to continue Pettibone's assignments for the sake of stability. Thus Iphionella philippinensis becomes the new type species of Iphionella, and Iphione cimex Quatrefages is confirmed as type of Gaudichaudius. [details]

Editor's comment McCowin et al (2018) recombined Iphionella risensis into Thermiphione Hartmann-Schröder, 1992, and noted that molecular data was unavailable for the Iphionella type species Iphionella philippensis Pettibone, 1986, which is now the only species in the genus. Like Thermiphione species it lacks eyes and lateral & median antennae, and can have 13 pairs of elytra. If it is in the same clade as the better-known Thermiphione species, then instead Iphionella as the much older name would be the valid genus name of the species group [G. Read] [details]
