Taxonomy Erected to replace the preoccupied name Sphinctrella Schmidt, 1870. However, Sollas (1886) had already erected the name Vulcanella for Sphinctrella-type sponges, which was subsequently considered a junior synonym of Sphinctrella by himself in 1888. De Laubenfels' replacement name is thus unnecessary and junior to Vulcanella. [details]
