Note 2 samples "Mus. Cuming" in type collection...
Type material 2 samples "Mus. Cuming" in type collection NHMUK, resp. 3 and 2 specimens, all corresponding to the morphological characteristics as outlined by Reeve (1849; pl. 6, sp. 27). The actual "Mus. Belcher" specimen as mentioned by Reeve has as yet not been located. The "Mus. Cuming" sample containing 3 specimens is accompanied by a label stating “T. sanguinea, Reeve icon. Pl. 4. f. 27 California”, yet none of the three specimens corresponds to the figure. Please also note the plate error in the label text (pl. 4 in stead of pl. 6).
Neither one of these samples is eligible as type material, yet both are representative of the species as such. In that respect, they have been returned to the type collection after examination, and such until the Belcher specimen has been located. [details]
