Nomenclature There can be little doubt that Johnston (1842) changed his mind on the spelling of this genus name after he had already finished his manuscript. In the first part of his book he used the name Duseideia, which he changed to Dysidea in the second part. In the introductory part (Preface, pp. iii-xii) he used Dysidea. We interpret this correction by him as a correction of an incorrect original spelling as outlined in ICZN 32.5.1. Since Dysidea precedes the use of Duseideia, the latter name is the junior name. Also, Duseideia has not been used in the literature after 1899, and as such is an nomen oblitum in the sense of art. ICZN 23.9.2. The Systema Porifera (Cook & Bergquist, 2002: 1062) declared Duseideia as a nomen nudum, but this is incorrect as the genus was defined by Johnston and its two original species were recognizably described. One of them is the well-known D. fragilis, the other (D. papillosa) is not a sponge but a zoanthid. [details]
