Taxonomy • This taxon was never formally described, it is a nomen nudum. It was listed by Koste & Shiel (1987:984) as Brachionus plicatilis magadiensis Koste (Fig.18:5a,b) and as "form not yet recorded from Australia". The reference to Koste (1978) is erroneous, the figures originate from Koste (1980:152, figs.3a,b, as B. plicatilis). In Koste & Shiel's (op. cit.) figure caption (Fig.18:5a,b) the taxon is not named but mentioned as "B. plicatilis Müller with rounded apical spines, Nakuru Lake, E. Africa". According to Koste (1980) [op. cit.] the specimens, however, originate from Lake Magadi, Kenya.
• In his Doctoral thesis, Mills (2006) summarized that "This member of the species complex (=B. plicatilis s.l.) was hinted at from as early as 1932 by de Beauchamp and later by Pourriot et al. in 1967 (Pejler 1974). Although Pejler (1974) provided an illustration indicating a dwarfed form of this species, he was uncertain of its identity, labeling it B. sp., assumed to be closely related to either B. plicatilis or B. dimidiatus. It was not until 1987 (Koste and Shiel 1987) that this species became known as B. “magadiensis”." [details]
