Type material The BMNH specimen portal lists a specimen collected by the Sea Lark Expedition (BMNH 1912.2.1.73-74) as the (wet) type, but Bowerbank's original description mentioned Port Elizabeth, South Africa as type locality. In Dendy's (1922) account of the sponges from the Sea Lark Expedition there is no Ciocalypta tyleri described or mentioned. In a visit to the collection in 1988 one of us examined the type from Port Elizabeth, at that time listed, as 1930.7.3.32. This coll.reg.nr. is not listed in the BMNH specimen portal. [details]
