Nomenclature Mytilus praecisus Montagu, 1803, is a senior synonym of Sphenia binghami Turton, 1822, but Montagu's name was long considered to be a synonym of Hiatella arctica and has not been used as the valid name of a taxon after 1899. Pending a formal reversal of precedence under ICZN Art. 23.9, MolluscaBase maintains the status quo, with Sphenia binghami as the valid name. [details]
