Etymology Jean André Napoléon Perier (1806–1880), later physician-in-charge of l’ Hôtel impérial des Invalides, was an ethnographer interested in north African culture (see Perier 1863), he had participated in the exploration of Algeria. Lucas (1849: 52) was clear, writing: “j'ai dédiè cette espèce à mon collègue M. [Monsieur] Perier, un des médecins de la Commission Scientifique.” [details]
