Publication date Eolis napolitana was described in an appendix (vol. 8 page 7, dated 1844 on the frontispiece) along with corrections and additions to page 16 of vol. 2 (of 1841) where genus Eolis is treated. The date of publication is given as 1823 by some authors, but this species does not appear in the first edition (1823-1830) of Delle Chiaje's memoirs; it is given as 1844 by Sherborn (Index Animalium) with the page reference to vol. 8 page 7. However the name was made available when published in the captions of plates (vol. 6, pl. 73 figs. 12-14; vol. 7, pl. 88 figs. 13-15) dated 1841 by Sherborn (1922).
The original combination for the name is cited variously as Eolida neapolitana or Eolidia neapolitana but is actually Eolis neapolitana; one has however to go back to vol. 2 to see "Eolis" spelled out, in the supplement it only reads "E. neapolitana" and "eolide" is merely an Italian translation of the generic name.
