Taxonomy Lévi (1953) subdivided the Demospongiae in three subclasses based on reproductive characters. Ceractinomorpha were defined as viviparous sponges. As gradually more information has become available on reproductive modes of sponges, vivipary was demonstrated to be a marker at most for lower taxa (family, genus). The Systema Porifera suggested to abandon the subclass level until such time that new markers would become available. [details]
