Etymology Not stated. It is safe to assume Spiophanes kroyeri was named after Danish biologist Hendrik Krøyer, with Grube using an unaccented "kroyeri". Only if Grube had used krøyeri would we need to consider whether to replace the accent with an 'oe' (also not necessary for Danish words), but earlier taxonomists did use 'oe' before the modern Codes clarified how to treat names based on accented family names of people. [details]

[details]

Spelling Spiophanes kroyeri Grube, 1860. Assumed named after Danish Hendrik Krøyer, but Grube used an unaccented "kroyer", therefore there is no problem with accent replacement. Code article 32.5.2.1. only requires 'oe' to be inserted if the original species name was accented (it was not), and also the word was German (Krøyer was Danish.) [details]

Type locality Lectotype locality (Meißner, 2005) Greenland Sea, Northwest Atlantic Ocean, regional location approximated at 77.655, -5.976. Radashevsky et al (2020) state that "original registry catalogue and labels for the types of S. kroyeri maintained in the polychaete collection of the Zoologisches Museum Berlin (ZMB), Germany, say that the material was from Iceland, i.e. from the southern part of the Greenland Sea ([222]; Birger Neuhaus in litt., 15 Jul 2019)."
