Etymology The name of the genus is composed by the prefix of Greek origin tachy-, meaning 'rapid' or 'swift', and the Greek word trypan, meaning 'to bore', and refers to the quick movements of the specimens while boring into the sediment: "For the latter and several allied species the name Tachytrypane may be given, from their active boring movements through sand and mud." (McIntosh in Jeffreys, 1876: 217). [details]
