Validity Records of S. socialis in the literature appear to be conspecific with S. sagittifer, but the original specimens were Echinorhynchus gadi. See comments in Linton (1932), Van Cleave & Linicome (1940) and Golvan (1969). Errors were made by Van Cleave (1924) and Meyer (1932). [details]
