Centropages brachiatus is a copepod species indicator of cold coastal waters (CCW). We analyzed the changes in its frequency, abundance, and distribution pattern before, during, and after the 2017 coastal El Niño. Twelve bio-oceanographic samplings were conducted between March 2016 and November 2017 off Lambayeque. A total of 84 zooplankton samples were obtained between San José cove and Lobos de Afuera Islands. We used a WP2 plankton net to collect samples at surface level in a cross-shore section up to a maximum distance of 50 nm. Simultaneously, from January 2016 to December 2017, surveys were carried out in a fixed oceanographic station located 10 nm away from Chicama. In 2016, the abundances of C. brachiatus off Lambayeque and Chicama were 3,957 ind.100 m-3, and 215,478 ind.100 m-3, respectively, while in 2017, it was not recorded in any of the surveys conducted in those places. We can conclude that EN Costero had a strong impact on C. brachiatus population, due to particular characteristics and extreme values of some oceanographic variables, such as temperature and salinity, resulting in the complete absence of this species in Lambayeque and Chicama
