Etymology Genus name is derived from an old local name of a tiger, "babr", which inhabited the Transbaikalian part of the former Irkutsk Province, and was shown in the emblem of the province (babr holding a sabre in his mouth). The name is given due to dark cross stripes on the body of the representatives of the genus. [details]
