Etymology In Greek mythology Alpheus was a river god and a river, a passionate hunter, who fell in love with nymph Arethusa. Arethusa fled from him to the island Ortygia near Syracuse (Sicily) and metamorphosed herself into a well. Alpheus as a river flow under the sea to Ortygia, where he united his waters with those of Arethusa. [details]
