Taxonomy The species was erected by Ehlers (1870) for a specimen growing on Spongia tubulosa sensu Esper, 1797 (pl. LIV fig. 1) from Cape of Good Hope. Ehlers described the specimen and assigned it as a new species of Scopalina Schmidt, 1868. Ehlers' description of its skeleton and spicules make it clear that this is most likely a Crellidae, although the description is vague enough to allow other interpretations. Hooper (1996: 172) assigned it to Clathria (Clathria), but in his summary table (Hooper, 1996: 576) he declared the species unrecognizable. The description of the strongly curved tridentate chelae by Ehlers render a microcionid affinity unlikely. A neotype is need to properly confirm the genus membership. [details]
