The authors challenged Alekseev's subgeneric division of the genus and wrote "The phylogenetic relationships of E. speratus are unclear. According to Alekseev (2019), it belongs to the subgenus E. (Speratocyclops) together with the species group E. arcanus Alekseev, 1990. In our opinion, it is currently impossible to construct a phylogeny of the genus. Morphological data on most species of the genus are very incomplete. Genetic methods give an ambiguous picture with a small sample of species. Therefore, we believe that Alekseev’s allocation of subgenera was premature. Some of its subgenera do not have synapomorphies."
