Description Distribution: tropical western and eastern Atlantic, Indian and Pacific (mainly Indo-Pacific). Dorsal fin with 10 spines; soft rays 11-17. Numerous short filaments at the tip of the dorsal spines. Soft rays in anal fin 5-7. Thickened and elongate lower pectoral rays. Scales ctenoid or cycloid. Vertebrae 26-28. About 55 cm maximum length. Usually small and very colorful. Inhabits rocks and corals. All are carnivores of small benthic crustaceans and fishes. The few species studied are protogynous hermaphrodites. Males maintain territories with several females. Cirrus (lat.) = fringe [details]
