Description Carapace elongate, oblong, medium size; ornament of strong reticulate ribs with numerous small tubercles giving the shell a crinkled appearance; a strong, rugged ventro-lateral keel; weak caudal process; distinct subcentral tubercle. Shell thick, heavy, opaque; four posterior and two anterior muscle scars. Hinge: right valve with anterior tooth simple, peg-like, on an elevated base, posterior tooth smooth, divided into three obscure lobes, median groove crenulate; left valve with anterior tooth simple, median bar crenulate. Diagnosis The type specimens are representative of the large, heavy forms found in the Duntroonian and Waitakian. Late Tertiary and Recent specimens are smaller and more delicate. [details]
