Type species Kinberg created Iphione for his new species I. ovata and for Polynoe muricata Lamarck. The type species is Polynoe muricata 'Savigny 1818' [=Lamarck] in Fauchald (1977), but Iphione ovata Kinberg in Hartman (1959). Pettibone (1986:2) concluded that Baird (1865) had subsequently assigned the type species status to Polynoe muricata in a statement that the 'typical species' is the Polynoe muricata of Savigny (referring to Savigny's later more detailed description than in Lamarck). However, in Article 67.5 the ICZN Code explicitly rules out such designations based on the word 'typical'. Thus Baird (1865) did not designate the type species of Iphione. A type species concept for a genus was introduced by the Strickland code (1878). Thus subsequent designations of the type of a genus earlier than 1878 are unlikely. It is possible Hartman (1959) is the first to designate a type (as Iphione ovata), but it is unknown why she did this when I. ovata was often treated as a synonym of the more often reported I. muricata, and it is equally possible she was simply repeating an earlier usage.
