Original description In Yabeina the septa and septula are only half consolidated throughout the whorls, but in Colania only in the last few whorls the fusion of the septa and septula is complete, and the keriotheca entirely disappears. In the present genus consolidation of the septa and septula takes place almost in the first whorl, and the wall is almost entirely devoid of the keriotheca. There are usually one or two transverse septula in between each pair of transverse septa. This is especially true in the outer whorls. In each spiral chamber there is usually one or at most two axial septa, occasionally none, and two or three axial septula. Both axial and transverse septa and septula are more or less warped either laterally or vertically. Because of the absence of the keriotheca and perfect consolidation of the septa and septula, this genus has been hitherto regarded as congeneric with Sumatrina. Comparative study shows however that the form under consideration is quite distinct from the last-named genus. In Sumatrina there is no true axial septa, and the transverse and axial septula are all very short, straight and of the same length or height. The septula in that genus suggest a process of consolidation of a keriotheca which has a thickness that equals the height of the septula. There is absolutely no evidence to show that the original keriotheca has locally gone through a process of elongation in the direction perpendicular to the tectum. On the other hand, the septa and septula in Lepidolina, though perfectly consolidated, are clearly a further modification from the Yabeina stage. It might be considered logical to regard Neoschwagerina, Colania, Yabeina and lastly Lepidolina as subgenera of one great genus, but it is simply a mechanical artificiality to regard Lepidolina as congeneric with Sumatrina. The two are extreme products of two convergent lines of variation.
