Description Description: Test endothyroid, discoid, asymmetrical, with 1-2 last whorl semi-evolute to evolute. Important lateral filling and crust on the roof. Wall slightly differentiated with a black tectum and a dark lower layer, apparently similar to a wall of Omphalotis. Aperture terminal and simple.
Occurrence: Late Tournaisian-middle Visean Paleotethys of the former USSR (Urals, Volga-Ural region, Donbass, Timan, Tien Shan, Siberia) and western Paleotethys. M. excelsa and M. excelsaeformis are important in the Visean biozonation of western Siberia and Kuznets Basin (e.g., Kalvoda, 1999). Abundant in the Aleksian, Mikhailovian and Venevian; rare in Zapaltjubian/ Voznesenian and late Askynbashian of Akiyoshi (Japan).
