Status D. excentricus elongatus was not considered by Mortensen (1948) or any subsequent worker to be a valid taxon [...]. It is not consistent to name a subspecies based on slight changes in length to width ration without also naming new taxa on the basis of many other features that can vary as much, if not more than test width. [details]

Diagnosis This interesting sand-dollar differs from the common Dendraster excentricus in three points: it is longer than wide, the petals are narrower, more nearly equal, and much less well-defined, and the boundaries of the columns of coronal plates of the posterior part of the test are distinctly marked on the apical surface by brown lines. Furthermore, in young excentricus of the size of these specimens, each coronal plate of the apical surface (at least, each of the larger ones) is usually just a little convex, and this convex portion has slightly smaller tubercles, so that the apical surface is not uniformly smooth and even, as in elongatus; description exaggerates this difference, but it is obvious to the naked eye when the specimens are side by side. [details]
