Etymology Not stated, uncertain. Although there is no obvious link to the worm name, according to Wikipedia Cabira or Kabeira (/kəˈbaɪrə/; Greek: τὰ Κάβειρα) was a town of ancient Pontus in Asia minor, at the base of the range of Paryadres. It is likely to be located at modern Niksar in northern Turkey. [details]
Grammatical gender According to Pettibone (1966) Cabira is feminine. This is supported by the 'a' ending and by Webster's type species Cabira incerta having a feminine adjectival suffix. [details]
Homonymy Cabira has long been thought to be a junior homonym (Leiper 1908), but is still unreplaced and recent authors who added taxa in 2007 and 2021 appear to be unaware of its uncertain validity. Altogether there are four Cabira homonyms with Webster's being the most junior. However, the purported senior names are somewhat dubious and may not have been tested for availability. If a homonym, perhaps the purported synonym Paracabira Britaev & Saphronova, 1981 could replace it. [details]
