Description Trichomes free-floating, solitary, or entangled in dense, microscopic clusters, but mostly occurring in short, variously curved fragments of filaments, or irregularly coiled (width of irregular coils mostly 20-37 μm), free-floating, constricted at the cross-walls, not attenuated towards ends. Cells ellipsoid or typical barrel-shaped, usually a little longer than wide, blue-green or yellowish, 4-8.5 x (2.5) 3-4 (5.3) μm; apical cells of the same shape and size as the vegetative cells. Het¬erocytes solitary, intercalary (only after fragmentation occasionally in terminal position), oval, always a little elongated, 5-7.5 x 4-5 (7) μm. Akinetes intercalary, separated from the heterocytes usually by 1-4 cells, solitary, cylindrical with rounded ends, sometimes slightly arcuated, with smooth, colourless exospore, (12) 16-21.5 (27.4?) x (5.7?) 6.8-8.5 μm.  [details]

Identification Tendency to formation of ± straight trichomes only in cultures, natural populations are not very variable. In culture the length: width ratio of vegetative cells can be highly variable. Often misinterpreted with "Anabaenaflos-aquae", morphological transitions to D. mendotae also exist. Anabaena incrassata Nygaard 1929 likely belongs within the wide variability of this species. [details]
