The gender of the nameThorecta: with its ending of ‘-a’ presumes the name to be female. However, Wiedenmayer (1977: 70) suggested that Thorecta must be male, because it was not originally a correct Greek word (it derives from Thorectes = warrior with a breastplate). Wiedenmayer's conclusion that Lendenfeld meant his name to be male cannot be confirmed from the use by Lendenfeld, as he named Thorecta species variously neuter, feminine or male. [details]
